Common phobias

by Marygrace Anderson

We have all seen the list of absurd and ridiculous phobias:
  • Consecotaleophobia – The fear of chopsticks
  • Euphobia - The fear of good news, hearing good news
  • Melophobia - The fear of music
  • Soceraphobia - The fear of parents-in-law
  • Arachibutyrophobia - The fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth
  • Metrophobia - The fear of poetry
  • Olfactophobia - The fear of smells or odours
  • Heliophobia - The fear of the sun or sunlight
There are in fact only two phobias we are born with, fear of loud noises and falling over, which, we believe, are caused by the natural reflexes we experience as babies. This is great news! This actually means you created your own fear and therefore, you can stop it as well!

When I get a call from a client, they will tell me they have a fear of flying. They do not say, I have aerophobia, aviatophobia, aviophobia or pteromerhanophobia. The same applies to people who suffer any fear.

In my personal experience, I have treated a wide range of people with many types of fear: social situations; speaking in public; cats; spiders; performing concerts in public; taking exams; the dark; urinating in public places; loud noises; flying; dating, to name but a few.

The thing is, no fear is ridiculous or stupid if it is truly ruining your enjoyment of life. The other important point is that you are not alone! Many people believe they are the only sufferer even with the most popular phobias. We all have fears, but if the fear is preventing you from doing an activity, you should seek help. A characteristic of phobias is that it can spread into other phobias. Children can also “learn” fears from their parents. So if your mother hated going in lifts, the likelihood of you developing a fear of lifts will increase as well.

So I encourage you now to face your fear and challenge it. Fear hates change, laughter and losing. So stand up and say over and over to yourself:
“I am no longer going to tolerate this fear! I can and will stop it by the power of my own thoughts. I created it in my mind and I will stop it now with my own mind.”

What are you afraid of?

by Marygrace Anderson

We all have, to some degree, a fear of something. Phobias can range from the very common:

  • Altophobia- fear of height
  • Aviophobia – fear of flying
  • Arachnophobia - fear of spiders

To the uncommon:

  • Alliumphobia - fear of garlic
  • Allodoxaphobia - fear of opinions
  • Amathophobia - fear of dust

And those are just a few of the "A’s"! There are literally thousands of recognized phobias and some are even culture specific or considered just superstitions.

The point is, it doesn’t matter where it came from, how silly or ridiculous it seems, if it is true to you, it is very serious. I have had a client so afraid of cats, that she ran into traffic to avoid it, literally putting her life in danger.

The great thing about phobias, for the majority of people, is that are very easy to treat. With a few simple techniques, you can learn how to get a hold of the fear, change it and get back on track with your life…minus the fear.

Also claustrophobics and fear of flying is also common now (people getting ready for Christmas flights I suspect). Anyway, the majority over come their fears in 1 session. Is it just me?

by Marygrace Anderson

"Is It Just Me?" is a question asked by almost every client in the beginning of a hypnotherapy session. The issue may be related to weight, phobias, confidence or panic attacks but it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that everyone thinks they are alone in their suffering. They feel embarrassed and it’s only made worse when they don’t get the right support.

The answer is simply no. You may not be around people who suffer from your condition, but on a global scale, there are a lot of individuals experiencing the same problem. This is why we have so many associations for specific conditions.

One of the aims we try to achieve in a hypnotherapy session, is reassuring a client that they are not alone and, more importantly, there is a solution to solving their problem. The reassurance allows them to finally have hope again and determination to beat and win over their presenting issue. There are several techniques you can learn, which will help empower you to take back control of your situation and then it is reinforced with hypnosis.

A woman came into the office who was suffering low self esteem from being made redundant. She felt alone. It had a knock on effect to her health, as she stopped exercising and was felling depressed and unfocused on finding a new career. So we did some easy positive affirmations (to increase her confidence) and used visualisation to help see where she wanted to go. We did a life wheel to break down the areas she wanted to focus on and then broke them down into smaller goals. She used these steps to get her focused on approaching her job hunt and getting back into her exercise routine. Once she began to see how she could move forward, the depression and low self esteem vanished.

Hope this helps you to realise you are not alone.
