Sports and Hypnosis

Athletes are great clients because they are used to working hard, pushing themselves, and setting personal goals. They also want to perform well so their motivation for success is very high. Helping a sports client achieve their goal is one of the most rewarding outcomes I have ever had.

Sports psychology is becoming increasingly more popular in all fields of athletics. Using various hypnotherapy techniques, it can be extremely effective in helping sports people get over past failures, utilizing their past achievements, and create an award winning mind set for competitions and training.

It's easy to train your body physically but adding the mental training can enhance your development as an athlete.

We tailor your session to meet your specific needs, whether that is competition preparation, motivation and goal setting, anxiety management or creating the athletic performance mindset.

We look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your dream.

The Putney Clinic and treating back pain - featured on Sky

Clive Lathey, director of the Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy, recently participated in the the programme Back to Health in the NHS, which was broadcast on Sky Channel 212 / Freesat Channel 401 on Sunday 3 February at 6pm. The programme looked specifically at back pain and its treatment. Below you can view the programme.

Synopsis

Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. Back pain may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include symptoms other than pain. These symptoms may include tingling, weakness or numbness.

In the UK, acute lower back pain is one of the most common reasons for GP visits. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year. Not all treatments work for all conditions or for all individuals with the same condition, and many find that they need to try several treatment options to determine what works best for them.

In this programme presented by Georgina Burnett we look at the latest innovations in back pain treatment and hear the views of family GP and television personality Dr Chris Steele, Dr Brian Hammond and Dr Adam Al-Kashi (from Back Care, the charity for healthier backs), Catherine Goodyear (Chief Operating Officer, British Osteopathic Association), Dr Dawn Carnes (National Council for Osteopathic Research), Tanith Hamm (Osteopath), Clive Lathey (Osteopath & Sports Scientist, The Putney Clinic) and Davy Snowdon (Former Olympic Weightlifting World Record Holder).

Our achievements in 2012

2012 has been a great year. We have had the London Olympics, which saw a huge success for Team GB and - why not - Team USA  (best of both worlds). It has also been a year that has seen our business take some very positive steps forward.

At the start of the year, our website was redesigned. We love it! If you haven't seen it, take a look and see what you think.

We continue to work at The Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy, located in the Putneymead Medical Centre (one of London's largest GP practices offering NHS and private care). Clive Lathey and his team continue to offer the best all-round care you need including physiotherapy, osteopathy, nutrition, acupuncture, podiatry and more. Parkside Hospital is also located in the Centre. Visit their website for more details.

We have also started practising at Bodies Under Construction Physiotherapy in Chiswick. They have an outstanding multidisciplinary service and are located in the Riverside Club. For details of the services they provide, visit their website.

We have also established links with other companies we admire and respect and have placed them on our "We Recommend" page.

The benefits of hypnobirthing classes

Marygrace Anderson is now offering hypnobirthing classes at The Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy.

The benefits of hypnobirthing include:
  • Manage any discomfort through powerful breathing techniques.
  • Reduces fear, tension and discomfort, thus naturally increasing discomfort threshold.
  • Learn relaxation techniques that will help your body to work the way it is designed to.
  • Learn how to put yourself in control of your birth, rather than blindly turning your birthing experience over to your doctor or midwife.
  • Less medication and chemical anaesthesia is needed as muscles thin and open easily.
  • Hypnosis shortens the first stage of delivery by approximately 3 – 4 hours for mother's delivering their babies. For subsequent deliveries, it is not unusual for them to be as quick as 60 - 120 minutes long.
  • Learn visualisation techniques that can help your body to do what it wants to do.
  • Allow your mind and body to work together in harmony.
  • Experience the pleasures of birth rather than the negative experiences you may have heard from others.
  • Release worries and concerns you may have about birth.
  • Enables mother to go into "hypnotic relaxation" if unable to sleep between feeds.
  • Raises resistance to fatigue during delivery thus minimizing maternal exhaustion.
  • Encourages the production of milk. Decreases "post natal blues" and speeds up recovery.
  • Use the endorphin release to increase your body's natural anaesthetic; a much safer option than relying on pharmaceuticals and other drugs.
